I received a digital advance reader’s copy (ARC) of The Drama With Doomsdays by Scott Reintgen. Since this version is just a proof and not the final version, I won’t quote directly and will keep my comments general.

In The Drama With Doomsdays, Celia Cleary is getting the hang of her powers of prophecy, though she is also dealing with the grief of losing her grandmother. However, in general, life is good, with her new boyfriend Jeffrey and her friends knowing—at least somewhat—about her magical ability. But when she receives a vision about an impending doom involving the entire eighth grade class, her peace is shattered. Now she has to figure out which student is at the center of the disaster before it’s too late.

As I said in my review of the first book of the series, this is so cute. Which might be odd to say about a book with “Doomsdays” in the title, but I stand by it. Celia is just such a sweet protagonist, and you can’t help but want her to succeed. I also really like Jeffrey and the rest of the friend group; they’re a fun bunch.

The new character Skyler is a great addition, too. It’s cool to see the different types of prophecy powers there are in this world, and the different ways they can be used.

The stakes in this are higher than the first book, at least in terms of the number of people affected. It makes for a slightly intense read, but not so much so that the intended middle grade audience would be too upset. Celia has lots of skills, not to mention help, so there’s always a sense of empowerment and hope.

I also liked the message that a person is always better off facing a struggle with friends and family to help them. It’s a good lesson for kids, and delivered well, without it sounding too cheesy or preachy.

In the end, The Drama With Doomsdays is an excellent adventure with a great cast and interesting magic. It’s an exciting and fast-paced read that kids will love. I definitely recommend this series!
