I received a digital advance reader’s copy (ARC) of Something Close to Magic by Emma Mills. Since this version is just a proof and not the final version, I won’t quote directly and will keep my comments general.

In Something Close to Magic by Emma Mills, Aurelie is just trying to get by while doing an apprenticeship at a bakery. She has to hide her magical abilities, as they’re stigmatized, but somehow a bounty hunter named Iliana finds out about them. Iliana recruits Aurelie to help her magically find a missing person in the dangerous woods nearby. This person, however, turns out to be none other than Prince Hapless, third child of the late king. Aurelie soon is swept on an adventure to protect the prince, joined by Iliana and a grumpy troll, as they journey through a landscape of strange woods, magic portals, and courtly intrigue. And the more Aurelie gets to know Hapless, the more she wonders if she can seek something more for herself than mere survival. Maybe risking her heart wouldn’t be so bad after all.
This story is really charming! I liked the vaguely medieval fantasy setting, with magic sprinkled in. It’s an interesting world, with magic considered to be such a detrimental tool, taking more than it gives. I also liked how it affected Aurelie’s own regard for herself, making her feel inadequate and as if she needs to hide this part of herself. It makes her sympathetic and easy to root for as she’s forced to put herself out of her comfort zone.
I also really liked the other characters, especially Iliana and Hapless. The former is witty and swashbuckling, but with a vulnerability that makes her well-rounded. And the latter is awkward and sweet, and so entertaining to read about. I really enjoyed his bond with Aurelie as it grew and changed.
The aspects of adventure and mystery were also excellent. There’s a decent amount of action, from fighting and spying to navigating the parties of high society. These are engaging, but also well balanced with the quieter, more character driven moments. I especially liked the subplot involving Iliana and her ex, as well as the more main plot involving Hapless’ siblings and his steward.
In the end, Something Close to Magic is a delightful romp filled with great characters on a quest through a fun setting. It’s clever and light-hearted, a feel-good romantic adventure through and through. Emma Mills is definitely an author I’d read more from!
